Valley Water is the primary water resource agency for Santa Clara County, supplying wholesale water, providing flood protection, and serving as an environmental steward for clean, safe creeks and healthy ecosystems. Valley Water serves approximately two million people in 15 cities: Campbell, Cupertino, Gilroy, Los Altos, Milpitas, Monte Sereno, Morgan Hill, Mt. View, Palo Alto, San Jose, Santa Clara, Saratoga and Sunnyvale, and the towns of Los Altos Hills and Los Gatos, and manages 10 dams and surface water reservoirs, three water treatment plants, a state-of-the-art water quality laboratory, 400 acres of groundwater recharge ponds, and 275 miles of streams.

We are seeking an experienced Senior Plant/Pipeline Mechanical Technician to join Valley Water’s North Water Treatment Operations unit within the Treated Water division. The Senior Plant/Pipeline Mechanical Technician will lead, plan, oversee, train, and participate in the more complex and difficult work of staff responsible for performing a variety of duties. These duties include installation, maintenance, and repair of equipment in water treatment plants, advanced water treatment facility, and pumping stations. Work will be conducted on pumps, chemical feed equipment, valves, and related mechanical equipment used for water treatment, storage, and distribution. This position will need to ensure adherence to work standards and specifications. The Senior Plant/Pipeline Mechanical Technician will be responsible for performing a variety of technical tasks relative to assigned areas of responsibility.

Key Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

• Lead, plan, train, and review the work of staff responsible for performing a variety of duties involving the installation, maintenance, and repair of equipment in water treatment plants, advanced water treatment facility, and pumping stations, including pumps, chemical feed equipment, valves, and related mechanical equipment used for water treatment, storage, and distribution.
• Plan, direct, and participate in the diagnose of mechanical problems; estimate time, materials, and equipment required for jobs assigned; requisition of materials as required. Inspect, maintain, repair, install, and test various mechanical equipment and related components including pumps, chemical feed equipment, valves, underground piping systems, and related appurtenances.
• Supervise the use, care, and operation of hand tools and power equipment including welding equipment, lathes, drill presses, sanders, trucks, and a forklift.
• Train assigned employees in their areas of work including mechanical maintenance and repair methods, procedures, and techniques. Verify the work of assigned employees for accuracy, proper work methods, techniques, and compliance with applicable standards and specifications.
• Read and interpret plans and specifications; review the mechanical portions of engineering designs and proposed facility modifications; assign work to crews accordingly. Maintain accurate and complete records of work performed; enter and retrieve data from databases; prepare and present verbal and written reports of work completed.

Ideal Experience:

• Two (2) years of post-apprenticeship experience in the maintenance of mechanical equipment and components of the type commonly found in industrial manufacturing, water treatment or utility facilities, and/or water distribution systems.
• In lieu of completing an apprenticeship, a candidate should possess six (6) years of journey-level experience in the maintenance of industrial mechanical equipment and components.
• Experience using software to track maintenance work orders.
• Experience negotiating prices and ordering parts for mechanical equipment and components.
• Proven track record solving mechanical maintenance issues by identifying possible repair methods.

Ideal Skills and Abilities:

• Ability to keep accurate and complete records administratively for all maintenance topics.
• Ability to perform the most difficult maintenance repair issues.
• Skills to estimate labor and materials for required mechanical work.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills including ability to communicate with vendors, operators, management, etc. Must be able to communicate clearly and concisely.

Ideal Knowledge:

• Strong knowledge of methods and techniques involved in the maintenance and repair of pumps, valves, and similar large mechanical equipment and components.
• Extensive knowledge of occupational hazards and standard safety practices in typical water or wastewater facilities.
• Knowledge of principles of leadership, supervision, and training.
• Knowledge of operations at water/wastewater treatment plants.

Ideal Training and Education:
Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade.

Required License or Certificate

• Possession of, or ability to obtain, an appropriate, valid California driver’s license. Individuals who do not meet the driver’s license requirement due to a disability will be considered for a reasonable accommodation on a case-by-case basis.
• Possession of a D-3 Water Distribution Operator certification issued by the State Water Resources Control Board (SWRCB), Division of Drinking Water (DDW) within 30 months from appointment.

North Water Treatment Operations Unit (Position Code 758)COVID-19 vaccination requirement:
