Valley Water’s mission is to provide Silicon Valley with safe, clean water for a healthy life, environment, and economy. We manage an integrated water resources system that includes the supply of clean, safe water, flood protection, and stewardship of streams on behalf of Santa Clara County’s 2 million residents.

Our popular internship program provides excellent opportunities to explore your chosen career path, develop industry specific skills and knowledge, and increase your professional network! As part of the Valley Water community, you get an insider’s perspective on the way we work and the impact we are able to make. The Summer 2024 Internship Program and will provide interns with training and experience leveraging collaboration tools while working both on-site and remote. Summer Interns will be given one-on-one mentorship, professional development training and an hourly pay of $26.31. At the end of the program interns are to prepare and present a Capstone presentation to share their experience and achievements.

The Office of Community Benefits (OCB), under Valley Water’s External Affairs Division, works to advance and build positive and proactive relationships with our community through engagement, education, grant funding opportunities, and partnerships. The OCB unit leads Valley Water’s Grants and Partnership Program, Community Rating System (CRS), and the Public Art Program. These programs provide the community access to resources and opportunities that build understanding, trust, and support for Valley Water’s goals and mission.

Note: Two internship opportunities are available to support the Office of Community Benefits.

INTERNSHIP LOCATION STATUS: This position is eligible for a hybrid telework schedule, typically working 40% remote and 60% onsite. For hybrid work, intern must perform their work in the state of California within 150 miles of their primary physical work location located in (San Jose, California) by their start date.

Effective Monday, January 1, 2024, Valley Water will no longer require proof of COVID-19 vaccination as a condition of employment for regular employees, temporary staff, student interns, retiree annuitants, and/or contractors.

Required License or Certificate

WE LOOK FOR INTERNS WHO ARE:

• Pursuing a major in Environmental Studies, Communications, Marketing, Public Policy, Public Administration, Political Science, Business Administration, Ethnic Studies, Arts, or a closely related field.

• Motivated individuals who are enthusiastic, organized, and interested in learning about grants management, public art, and community engagement while collaborating as part of a dynamic team.

• Strong interpersonal skills; the ability to build trust and foster relationships with internal and external partners.

• Familiar with Microsoft Excel and Word.

• Excellent verbal and written communication with a strong attention to detail.

• Positive, go-getter attitude and proactive work ethic with a passion for serving the community.

AS AN INTERN YOU WILL:

• Participate in biweekly learning sessions held every other Friday alongside fellow interns, focusing on elevating career readiness and cultivating professional development skills.

• For the Safe, Clean Water Grants and Partnerships Program: Assist with conducting outreach for our funding opportunities, such as updating flyers and webpages; developing social media posts; providing excellent customer service; reviewing and assessing invoices and project reports; drafting and routing memos and written reports; managing files and data in the online grants management system; assisting with responses to grantee and management inquiries; participating in grantee site visits; etc.

• For the Public Art Program: Assist with implementing a new Public Art Program by supporting community outreach/engagement activities and identifying opportunities to promote the program, etc.

• For the Community Rating System (CRS): Assisted with promoting flood preparedness and supporting CRS program administration, including hosting booths at events, drafting outreach materials, and assisting in annual CRS reporting.

• Perform administrative tasks to support the unit and its programs, as needed.

• Research, analyze, develop reports, and present findings.

• Participate in all facets of the OCB unit, including staff meetings and external meetings, as well as one-on-one training and guidance.

Selection Process

ELIGIBILITY:

The Summer Internship Program is open to undergraduate & graduate students who are third year and above enrolled in a college/university for Fall 2024.

• Pass a pre-employment screening process, including a background check.

• Proof of enrollment will be required prior to start of assignment.

• Can work full-time (40 hours/week) during the Summer Internship Program

• May 28 – August 16, 2024, for Semester Students

• June 17 – September 6, 2024, for Quarter Students
